Types of Welding

Type of welding

Types of weldings(Source-http://www.minaprem.com/)

1. Autogenous welding

when no material from an external source is used to fill the gap then it is known as autogenous weldingExample- resistance welding, TIG welding, Electron Beam Welding
Advantages-
  • Fusion welding of thin sheets is possible only in an autogenous way.
  • No filler material used
  • Weld appearance is good.

2. Homogeneous welding

When material from an external source is used to fill the gap which is the same as the base metal or workpiece, in this case, the homogeneous weld metal will be obtained and the welding process is known as homogeneous Welding.
Ex.- GMAW, TIG,
Advantages-
  • Thick metals can be welded easily
  • The strength of the joint is better than autogenous welding.
  • The tendency of crack formation during solidification reduces.
  • Welding of various joints, like a butt joint, lap joint, tee joint, corner joint, etc. are possible.

3. Heterogeneous welding

when material from external sources used to fill the gap which is different as compared with the base metal, in this case, heterogeneous weldments will be obtained and the welding process will be known as heterogeneous welding
Example- soldering and brazing
Advantages-
  • Various weld properties can be enhanced by choosing appropriate filler material.
  • Thick plates can be welded efficiently with proper edge preparation.
  • The strength of the joint is better than autogenous welding.
  • Due to the sufficient supply of molten metal, the tendency of crack formation during solidification reduces.
